The Dark Side of the Garden: An Artist Talk with Joan Colbert

About this event

@

Even the most familiar plants can hold unexpected stories.

Join artist Joan Colbert for a closer look at As Potent as a Charm , her ongoing series of black-and-white linoleum block prints inspired by the malevolent side of familiar plants. Drawing on literature, folklore, and her surroundings, Joan creates images that hint at darker stories while leaving space for viewers to form their own interpretations.

During the talk, Joan will share the inspiration and process behind the series and explore how an ordinary plant can become something unexpected on the printed page.

The artist talk is presented in conjunction with Higher Ground , on view at Peg’s Gallery.

Joan Colbert A graduate of The University of Akron, Joan is a printmaker, painter, and mixed media artist. Her recent, ongoing series, As Potent as a Charm , explores the malevolent side of familiar plants in a collection of black and white linoleum block prints. Although the concept is botanical, allusions to dark tales and malfeasance hint at a narrative within each visual representation. In 2019 Joan was honored with the Arts Alive Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Summit Artspace in Akron, Ohio. She was gallery coordinator for the Summit Artspace Gallery from 2007 to 2013, is a member of Artists of Rubber City and a longtime Highland Square resident. She works both in her 2nd floor home studio and her public studio at Summit Artspace in downtown Akron.
